Ribs are a delicious BBQ meat, but can also be made just as easily in the oven. Perfect for a weekend, these ribs are slow roasted until fall of the bone tender.
DRY RUB
A dry rub is a mix of spices that are rubbed into dry meat. Dry rubs are great because they can be made ahead of time. For this dry rub I use salt, black pepper, red chili powder, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried mustard, oregano, basil, and thyme. It may seem like a lot of spices, but these spices are key to the most flavourful ribs.
SLOW ROASTING
Slow roasting ribs is the best technique because it results in the most tender meat possible. If you were to cook the ribs in a hot oven it would become tough and chewy (YUCK!) You can also reduce the oven temperature for a longer cooking. These ribs are cooked at 300°F for 2 hours and 45 minutes, but for a longer cooking reduce your temperature by the percentage of time increased. For example 5 1/2 hours, the cooking time is doubled so, reduce the temperature in half (150°F). There may be some variance in the cooking time, so adjust as necessary.
Preheat oven to 300°F. Remove the membrane from the back of the ribs with paper towel.
Spread the spices over both sides of the ribs, and rub in.
Wrap tightly in aluminum foil and place into a baking dish. Cook for 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Open up the foil, and brush over the BBQ sauce. Broil for 3 minutes.
Rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
Brush more BBQ sauce over top (if desired). Enjoy!
